Backgrounds, UI Concepts: A Flower That Recalls

The concept art shown here is from my university student game project "A Flower That Recalls" (https://bit.ly/3VCpO53), with a focus on photorealism. I was the lead artist and a concept artist and background artist for this project.

"A Flower That Recalls" is a point-and-click puzzle game with mystery elements, featuring a Peranakan daughter in mourning as the game's protagonist, uncovering family secrets after her parents’ death. The game relies on surrealism and unreality being grounded in a realistic setting to convey discomfort to the player, reflecting the daughter's boggled mind as she treks through her distorted memories of her family.

The game mostly features photobashed assets, relying heavily on programmes like Photoshop to composite together a good-looking environment with props from real life photos taken on a live trip to the Malaysian state of Melaka.

The game deals with "past" and "present" realities, so twice the amount of art assets and research on wear and tear was required for this game.

The game only features about 6 rooms limited to a single Peranakan house, so the artists also learned about environmental storytelling in relation to a story-driven puzzle game with visual hints and mechanics scattered around the rooms in the house.
