Creature Design: Elemental Mushroom Mage

The concept art seen here is for a game still currently in development. My role in the team is to create concept art for character & world designs, as well as 3D character modelling and animation.

The protagonist of this game has the power to traverse between realms and fight monsters in those realms like this one, the Elemental Mushroom Mage. This monster’s attack pattern is to be harmless when unprovoked, but when threatened, it will unfurl itself into a domineering cloud of elemental carnage. Adding on the fact that this monster can attack from far away, this monster was conceptualised on the basis of surprise.

Every sheet has its own caption for the contents, please read them to find out more about the concept art creative process.

This is a monster that is a mage variant on one of the main enemies of the game. It is shaped like a mushroom, and it attacks with ranged magic, like fireballs. The interesting thing is, this monster only attacks when provoked.0

if the player comes too close, the mushroom cloud would shake its body out into form as it levitates. The monster generates electricity by rubbing its scarf arms together and blasting it towards its target.

The monster went through many varied concepts, with only “ranged attacks” as a keyword; I settled on a recognisable mage silhouette with a mushroom shape. The shape was perfect as I could get a natural shape of a wizard’s hat.

This is the basic monster design, while the mushroom cloud monster design you saw earlier was the enhanced form.

I developed its "elemental magic" to by studying the rough, slimy or fluffy cotton-like textures of unusual-looking fungi, as well as organic elements like smoke, clouds and fire to incorporate into the monster’s design.
